Case-Control Study for Accidental Hospitalization Risk Factors among Military Soldiers

Abstract
This study examined the physical and mental health factors affecting the accidental hospitalization of 200 injured and 200 uninjured ROK Army soldiers in the kangwon province from March to May, 1993.
@ES The results from the self administered questionnaire and analysis of the health exammination were as follows:
@EN 1. Among the personal characteristics of the soldiers, the religious beliefs of injured soldiers were significantly weaker than that of uninjured soldiers. And, smoking rate of injured soldiers was significantly higher than that of uninjured
soldiers.
2. Among the physical characteristics, subjective health evaluation of the injured soldiers was lower than that of uninjured soldiers and the difference was statistically significant. On the other hand, the differences in BMI(Body Mass Index),
wearing
glasses, symptom of anemia, and physical satisfaction were not statistically significant between the injured and the uninjured soldiers.
3. Items such as confidence and response toward physical exercise, practice of preliminary physical exercise (stretching) and satisfaction with military clinic were statistically significant between the injured and the uninjured soldiers.
4. Among the psychological characteristics, adaptation and satisfaction with an army life were statistically significant between the two groups.
5. Smoking, subjective health evaluation, confidence of physical exercise, and adaptation and satisfaction with an army life were selected as significant factors influencing accidental hospitalization based on log linear model. According to the
results
of the logistic analysis, the odds ratio of accidental hospitalization was 7.45 for the smoking soldier, 0.29 for the positive subjective health evaluation, 0.30 for a confident attitude toward physical exercise, 0.92 for a higher adaptation
score,
0.93
for a higher satisfaction score.
As we have seen, smoking was the most significant factor affecting accidental hospitalization. Subjective health evaluation, confidence toward physical exercise, and adaptation and satisfaction with an army life were statistically significant
variables
influencing a reduction of accidental hospitalization.
Therefore, It is necessary to reassess the payment and tax exemption for the cigarettes to reduce the risk factor of accidental hospitalization, smoking and to create a health management program for stress which motivates smoking in the military.
Military physical training should be practiced more systematically and more scientific manner which can contribute to the physical, mental, social health of soldiers and enforcement power.
